[ARCHIVED] Virtual Juneteenth

Juneteenth freedom day 2020 virtual celebration

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemiuc, Wellington invites residents to celebrate Juneteenth virtually.

The Village’s Virtual Juneteenth Celebration web page features videos, resources, and information to help mark this important date in our history.

Juneteenth is an important day throughout our nation and Wellington is proud to take part in recognizing the bravery of those who fought for their freedom. Our community’s strength comes from our diversity, and we must continue to work together to celebrate African American freedom, empowerment, and achievement together.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when a Union general came to Galveston, Texas, to inform a reluctant community that President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier had freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday’s name is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth."
