[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 Update March 17

Wellington Village Hall Clock Tower

Wellington stresses the importance of taking the Coronavirus very seriously. The Village has issued an emergency declaration for COVID-19 and elevated our EOC status to Level II. We have taken the steps necessary to enable us to access state and federal funds and issue regulations on gatherings and public safety, including business hours and curfews.

As of today, March 17th, the current recommendation from the CDC and White House are to avoid gatherings with 10 or more people and to continue to practice social distancing and properly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash hands.

Florida’s governor announced effective at 5:00 PM today that all bars and nightclubs will be closed for 30 days, that restaurants are restricted to half capacity, and customers are to be spread out in the restaurant. This applies to Wellington as well. We know that our local businesses and their employees depend on you, so check to see if they offer pick-up, take-out or delivery services.

The reason that it is so important to avoid contact with other people is to “flatten the curve.” This is an expression you have likely already heard. What this means is that in order to make sure our hospitals and medical centers are not confronted with treating more people than they can accommodate at one time, we need to try to slow the spread as much as possible. There are a finite number of beds and limited resources available at our area hospitals. To ensure that those who need treatment can get it, social distancing must become our everyday practice, it is important and still the very best way to keep the virus from spreading faster.

As for our seniors and the more vulnerable members of our community, we are continuing to find and develop ways to help them directly. Our STAR program is still operational, and we are working with our community partners like Wellington Cares and Interfaith to help you get the food and medicine you need.

Taking the proper precautions now will keep you and your family safe.
