WELLINGTON ANNUAL NON-POTABLE WATER IRRIGATION GRANT PROGRAM

January 28, 2010

Over the years, Wellington has promoted water conservation through many different public awareness programs. Recognizing that lawn irrigation is the number one culprit for excessive water consumption, in 1997 the Village, through the Conservation Element of Wellington’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted a grant program for the purpose of encouraging and assisting residents to conserve water.

Into the 13th consecutive year, the municipality is offering its popular Irrigation Grant. The grant program is designed to encourage and assist residents in the conversion of a potable water (treated water) irrigation system to a non-potable water (well, canal, lake water) irrigation system. For residents who irrigate their lawn twice a week, the cost of the installation may pay for itself in the first year in savings on the monthly utility bill. Monthly savings will continue for the resident and the long-term effects of water conservation and delayed water and wastewater treatment facility expansions will benefit all residents.

This program is offered until March 22, 2010. Grant amounts will be 50% of the installation costs up to a maximum of $800 for conversion of well systems or a maximum of $400 for conversion of a canal/lake system. Approximately 20 applications will be randomly drawn on March 23, 2010. Recipients will be notified by March 30 and the irrigation systems must be installed by August 2, 2010. Note: If you already have an existing well or pump irrigation system, you are ineligible to participate in this program.
